Wiring a Kitchen That Carries Modern Appliances
The kitchen is the hardest working room in the house electrically, and it is often wired for a very different set of appliances than the ones sitting on its counters now. A south Scottsdale ranch home from the 1960s or 1970s was built for a refrigerator, a range, maybe a dishwasher and a toaster. Today the same room might hold an induction range, a built in microwave, a second refrigerator drawer, an instant hot water tap, an espresso machine and a powerful range hood. When breakers trip, outlets feel warm or the lights dim as the microwave starts, the wiring is telling you something.
We treat the electrical side of a kitchen remodel as its own piece of design rather than something the electrician improvises once the cabinets are in.
Start at the Panel
Before we promise anyone a new range or a string of pendants, we open the panel door and read it. The label tells us the service size and what is already connected. In Scottsdale that list is usually long. Air conditioning is the biggest load in almost every house here, and on the hottest afternoons it is running continuously while someone cooks dinner.
That matters most for induction. Induction cooking is fast, efficient and puts far less waste heat into a closed kitchen than gas, which is a real advantage in August. But most induction ranges want a large dedicated circuit. If the panel has room, it is a straightforward run. If the numbers are tight, a load calculation decides whether the house can take it or whether a service upgrade has to come first. It is better to learn that before the range is ordered.
Circuits the Kitchen Needs
A properly wired kitchen generally includes:
- Countertop receptacle circuits. At least two small appliance circuits serving the counter outlets, with GFCI protection, so a kettle and a toaster on the same stretch of counter do not trip a breaker.
- Dedicated appliance circuits. Separate circuits for the dishwasher, disposal, built in microwave and refrigerator are common practice, and many are required.
- Range or cooktop circuit. Sized to the appliance you actually buy, not to a guess.
- Hood circuit. A larger hood, especially one tied to make up air controls, needs its own planned wiring.
- AFCI protection where current code requires it for kitchen circuits.
Outlet spacing along the counter follows code, and island and peninsula outlets have their own rules. We lay these out on the plan so an outlet does not end up behind the coffee maker or in the middle of a backsplash tile feature.
Lighting in Layers
Most kitchens we walk into have one of two lighting problems: a single fixture in the center of the ceiling that puts your own shadow on the counter, or a grid of recessed lights that makes the room glaring at night. Good kitchen lighting uses layers, each doing one job.
- General light from recessed fixtures, placed to light the front edge of the counters rather than the middle of the floor.
- Task light from continuous LED strips under the wall cabinets. This is the single biggest improvement in most kitchens, and it lights the counter exactly where you work.
- Accent and island light from pendants, sized and hung so they do not block the view across the room.
Each layer gets its own switch or dimmer. Warm color temperatures read better against stucco tones and wood cabinets, and LED fixtures add very little heat to a room the air conditioner is already fighting to cool.
Under cabinet strips also collect monsoon dust on their lenses, so we favor recessed channel fixtures with a flat diffuser that wipes clean over exposed tape light.
Permits and Inspection
Adding circuits, moving outlets, installing new fixtures on new wiring and a panel upgrade generally need a permit and inspection through the City of Scottsdale. We schedule the rough in inspection before insulation and drywall close up the walls, and the final inspection once devices and fixtures are in. It is one of the few steps in a remodel that cannot be rushed, and it protects you when you sell the house.
