Most septic problems in Marion County trace back to a decision made before the first shovel: someone guessed at the soil instead of testing it. The ground under an Ocala lot is not uniform. Sandy topsoil sits over the Floridan aquifer, and karst limestone can rise closer to the surface than you would expect. Reading that soil correctly is the difference between a system that runs for decades and a field that surfaces in a wet summer. Here is what the ground tells us and why it matters.
The Perc Rate Sets Everything
A percolation test measures how fast water moves through the soil at the depth your drainfield will sit. That single rate drives the whole design. Fast-draining sand can take a compact conventional field, while slower soil needs more trench length or a different system entirely. Skip the test and you are sizing a drainfield from a guess, which is how fields end up too small. Our perc test and site evaluation produces the number every other decision depends on.
The Water Table Decides the System Type
Florida rules require four feet of vertical separation between the bottom of the drainfield and the seasonal high water table. In low or wet parts of Marion County that separation does not exist naturally, which rules out a standard buried field. The fix is an engineered mound that raises the absorption bed above the groundwater, or an aerobic treatment unit that discharges cleaner effluent. Tank Size Follows the House
Once the soil is understood, tank sizing is straightforward. It follows bedroom count as a proxy for daily flow, so a three-bedroom home usually needs a 1,000 to 1,250 gallon tank. That tank feeds a distribution box, and the box feeds a drainfield sized to the perc rate. Every piece is matched, which is the point of designing a new septic system installation as one connected system rather than a pile of parts.
Setbacks Are Part of the Soil Read
Reading the lot also means mapping the well, the property lines, and any surface water. The tank has to sit at least fifty feet from a private well, and the drainfield one hundred feet. On a tight parcel those distances shape where the field can even go, and sometimes the soil in the only available spot forces an advanced design.
